Working from home and going back to the office

On the topic of working from home , and the back to the office thingy...

(Only considering the context of a desk job here... which isn't the whole picture either)

Perhaps , only managers who aren't good at their function are worried about the efficiency of someone not under their eyes at all times... because they know perfectly well what they would do if someone's not keeping an eye on them at all times?

And that usually coincides with not really being able to give responsibility for a result... since they don't quite understand the hollistic purpose of whatever department or team they are leading?

They're too scared that if the other ones figure it out , they'll be replaced by them... so no motivation to learn it , and none to teach it either. It is only by talking about something that you truly learn it. So in a lot of organisations It's a feedback loop of darkness , of which the "must be in office" is a symptom of a competence management dynamic that leads down.

Me personally... It all depends.

(which is my answer to all these kinds of posts :) )

Some stages in certain projects don't require an office... some steps in some processes don't either.

and some do... But in most professions spent behind a desk , i find that the moments that the office doesnt help is bigger than when it does.

And for the moments that you do require to talk together... a walk together is much better.

And for the moments that you do require to work together physically in the same location... any room with a table in the world would do for me.

(And sitting on the floor can even be a fun way to mix it up)

but hey... If it's more efficient in your team to go to the office... then that is part of the job. Those still exist too.

Working from home and going back to the office... i think it's the completely wrong question.

It's not about the where and the when. It's about the what and the why of the people in the team we're talking about. And it's different in every team.

What do you think?
